The City of Mount Gambier hosted the South Australian Small Business Commissioner last week for an open and insightful conversation with local business operators.
The event brought together small business owners from across the region to connect directly with the Commissioner, exploring challenges and sharing experiences.
During the event, the Commissioner shared how his office supports businesses across the state, including guidance on resolving issues related to leases, contracts, equipment and cash flow, areas that can significantly affect day‑to‑day operations.
The Commissioner also spoke about his role as an independent voice for small business, operating separately from government departments, and how this enables his office to advocate effectively on behalf of operators. Insights from regional communities play an important role in shaping statewide advocacy efforts.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and it’s essential they have opportunities to speak directly with decision makers who understand the realities of operating in regional communities,” Mayor Martin said.
“Hosting the Small Business Commissioner in Mount Gambier ensures our local operators are heard, supported and connected to the advocacy and resources available to them at a state level.”
The Commissioner’s visit reinforced the importance of ensuring regional businesses have direct access to statewide support services.
City of Mount Gambier CEO Paul Simpson said Council played an active role in facilitating meaningful connections between local businesses and external support networks.
“Council invited and facilitated this free event to empower local business owners with practical knowledge and direct access to independent advice,” Mr Simpson said.
“By bringing the Small Business Commissioner to Mount Gambier, we are strengthening local capability, ensuring our business community understands where to turn for support, and reinforcing Council’s role as a connector between local needs and state‑level expertise.”
The Small Business Commissioner’s visit strengthened understanding of the support options available to small businesses and how they can seek assistance when issues arise.
It also highlighted Council’s ongoing role in connecting people with the services and expertise that can help them navigate challenges and build resilient, sustainable businesses.
